Nov. 08, 2022: Canada’s women’s team wasted no time to beat Hungary 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-12) today and claim a berth in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Sitting Volleyball World Championship today in Sarajevo.
Canada will face Italy tomorrow (15:30 local time) for a chance to play in the semi-finals. Hungary joins the round of 16 losers in pool-play for positions 9-13.
“We’re happy with the 3-0 win today,” said Canada’s women’s head coach Nicole Ban. “After this strong match against Hungary, we are looking forward to the quarter-final with Italy. They will be a tough opponent, but we are confident in our preparations.” The women’s team has faced Italy several times in recent years and trained in that country before this tournament.
On the men’s side today, Canada came back from a set down to defeat Rwanda for a spot in the World Championship 9-12 bracket following a 3-1 (20-25, 29-27, 25-12, 25-22) match.
Rwanda missed an opportunity to go two sets up when they dropped a set point at 24-23 in the second. Canada didn’t back down, even when challenged late in the fourth set.
Tristan Simmonds, assistant coach of the men’s team, said: “At first we didn’t know what to expect from Rwanda as we haven’t played them before and they are much bigger than they look on the floor. After starting slow in the first, our team executed our game plan very well especially later into the sets. It was an exciting match all around and we are extremely happy with how our team presented themselves on the big stage.”
Canada will next play Iraq on Wednesday, while Rwanda meets Japan for positions 13-16.
