LANGLEY, British Columbia – This Week in Sparta has eight teams in action, with three teams at U SPORTS championships. Women’s soccer is in Halifax at the U SPORTS championship, while men’s and women’s cross country are in Kelowna, B.C. at the U SPORTS championship meet. Women’s hockey and men’s and women’s volleyball have home games, with men’s volleyball adding a road game. Also on the road are men’s and women’s basketball and men’s hockey.

NOTABLE 

  • The Spartans are competing in their 15th national championship, and their fourth straight.
  • TWU is playing against Laval for the sixth time to open this year’s U SPORTS championship. The Spartans are currently 4-1 lifetime against the Rouge et Or.
  • The Spartans defeated the Rouge et Or 3-0 last season in the U SPORTS semifinals.
  • TWU’s lone loss to Laval was 5-0 in the 2014 U SPORTS gold medal match.
  • The No. 7 Spartans are on the same side of the draw as the No. 6 Victoria Vikes and the No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees. Also competing at the national championship are the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds, the No. 4 Cape Breton Capers, the No. 5 Nipissing Lakers, and the host No. 8 Dalhousie Tigers.
  • In their 14 previous championships TWU has competed in gold medal match 10 times, winning five times.

  • The Spartans, Constance Nankivell, who won the Canada West championship, is looking for another strong performance this weekend.
  • Nankivell has won three meets this season and was named Canada West Athlete of the Year.
  • TWU’s Yemane Mulugeta is coming off a silver medal performance at last week’s Canada West championship. Mulugeta was also named a Canada West First Team All-Star.

  • The No. 5 Spartans are currently in fourth spot in Canada West at 4-1, while the No. 1 Thunderbirds are 5-0 in Canada West.
  • Last weekend on the road the Spartans lost 3-0 to the Thunderbirds at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 32-58 lifetime against the Thunderbirds. TWU’s last win over UBC in conference play was 3-2 on November 26, 2022.

  • The Spartans are currently 62-27 lifetime against the Thunderbirds. Last season the Spartans split with the Thunderbirds. Losing 3-2 in Vancouver, B.C. and winning 3-2 in Langley, B.C.
  • TWU will host UBC on Friday night before traveling to Vancouver on Saturday night for the home-and-home series.

  • Last weekend on the road TWU beat the Regina Cougars 3-2, and 2-0, at The Co-Operators Centre in Regina, Sask.
  • Last weekend the Saskatchewan Huskies lost to the Manitoba Bisons 3-2 in overtime, and 4-0 at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon, Sask.
  • TWU is currently 3-7 lifetime against Saskatchewan. In their last two games, last season, the Spartans lost 3-2, and 2-1 to the Huskies in Saskatoon. TWU was 1-3 against the Huskies last season.

  • Mount Royal opened Canada West play with a road sweep of the MacEwan Griffins. Winning 70-55, and 78-58 in Edmonton.
  • TWU is currently 10-2 lifetime against MRU. Last season the Spartans swept the Cougars 65-54, and 76-59 at the LEC in Langley, B.C.

  • The Spartans are currently in fourth spot in the West division at 2-6, while the Huskies are in second place in the East division at 7-3.
  • Last weekend at home TWU beat the Regina Cougars 4-1, and 6-2, at home at the George Preston Recreation Centre, and the Aldergrove Credit Union Community Centre.
  • Last weekend the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Manitoba Bisons 4-3, and 5-0 on the road at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
  • TWU is currently 1-9 lifetime against Saskatchewan. In their last two games, last season, the Spartans split with the Huskies, losing 4-1 and winning 2-1 at the Langley Events Centre.

 About Spartan Athletics 
As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
