LANGLEY, British Columbia – This Week in Sparta has seven teams in action. Men’s and women’s soccer finish Canada West conference play at home, with women’s and men’s hockey continuing conference play with a home-and-home series, and men’s basketball continuing their preseason non-conference play with a home and away game. While women’s and men’s volleyball begin Canada West conference play on the road.

NOTABLE 

  • The Spartans, 7-3-2, will finish the Canada West season with a home play-off spot on the line. TWU currently sits in second place in the Pacific Division, one point ahead of the Victoria Vikes.  
  • The UNBC Timberwolves at 1-11 are in last place in the Pacific Division, while the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds at 12-0 are looking for an undefeated season.
  • Last week the Spartans defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 4-0, and 4-2, in a home and home series.
  • Last week the UNBC Timberwolves and the UBC Thunderbirds matched up in Prince George, B.C. with the Thunderbirds winning back-to-back games 7-0.
  • Earlier this year TWU defeated UNBC 3-1 in Prince George, B.C. and lost 4-0 to UBC in Vancouver, B.C.

NOTABLE 

  • The Spartans at 6-4-3 are currently in fourth place in the Pacific Division trailing the third place Fraser Valley Cascades, 7-4-3, by one win.
  • Last week the Spartans defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 1-0 in Abbotsford, B.C. and tied the Cascades 1-1 at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C.
  • The Victoria Vikes at 8-1-4 are looking to move into first place, as they trail the UBC Thunderbirds, 9-1-3, by one win.
  • Last week the Vikes earned four points against the UBC Thunderbirds. The Vikes won 1-0 at home against the T-birds and tied 0-0 at UBC. 
  • Earlier this year the Spartans tied the Thunderbirds 1-1 in Vancouver, B.C. and lost to the Vikes 1-0 in Victoria, B.C.

  • In their opening series the Spartans lost 2-0, and 4-0 to the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary, Alta.
  • Last week the UBC Thunderbirds lost 2-0 and 4-3 to the Mount Royal Cougars at home.
  • TWU is currently 2-16 lifetime against UBC. Last season the Spartans were 0-4 against the Thunderbirds.

  • In their opening series the Spartans lost 6-3 in both games against the Mount Royal Cougars at home in Langley, B.C.
  • Last week the UBC Thunderbirds lost 4-3 on both nights to the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary, Alta.
  • TWU is currently 0-22 lifetime against UBC.

  • The Spartans will continue preseason non-conference play this week against the Western Mustangs and the SFU Red Leafs.
  • TWU is 0-1 lifetime against the Mustangs, losing 79-67 in October of 2014.
  • The Spartans are 14-26 lifetime against the Red Leafs. TWU last defeated SFU, 73-72, on January 29, 2009.

  • The Spartans are currently 15-2 lifetime against the Griffins. The last time TWU lost to MacEwan was a weekend series sweep by the Griffins on February 8-9, 2019.

As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 13 sports in the Canada West conference, including women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, hockey, cross country, and track & field, as well as women’s rugby sevens. TWU also competes as an independent team in men’s rugby, as well as women’s and men’s disc golf. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 13 U SPORTS team championships and 32 Canada West team championships.
