The Two-Time Defending Champs

The Camosun Chargers are the defending CCAA national champion in men’s volleyball and through the first eight matches are 4-4.

On the men’s side the two-time defending champion Chargers are pegged to host the CCAA national championship this season and are starting to gel and heat up. In the month of November they have played six matches and have won four.  All six matches have been played on the road to date, with one more weekend coming up before the holiday break.  They will host the Douglas Royals this weekend.

They have a new look starting line-up this season with five of the six from last year gone.  These new players have yet to taste victory at home this season in their only two home matches.

GRADUATES:

Eduardo Bida was simply an outstanding talent for the Chargers over the past few seasons.  Last year he was dominate capped off by being named the Most Valuable Player at the CCAA national championship tournament.   He had 178 kills last year in 52 sets played during the regular season and was certainly one of the emotional leaders. 

Brendan Folkerts has graduated after a terrific career at Camosun and was an asset as a true complement to Bida on the other side.  He was a First Team All-Star last year with a team leading 201 kills in 61 sets played.

Setter Lucas Maffia has transferred to the University of New Brunswick this season and will be greatly missed.  He was a Second Team All-Star and the Player of the Match for the Chargers in the national gold medal match last year. From the setter position he really knew how to distribute the ball to balance their attack.

IMPACT RETURNERS:

The PACWEST’s Top Libero Kris La Guardia (pictured) is the only returning starter from last season’s championship team.  He provides the Chargers with stability in serve receive and continues making spectacular digs.

Edvard Adolfsen from Norway returns for his second season and patrols the leftside.  He currently leads the Chargers offence with 49 kills.

KEY ADDITIONS:

Lachlan Scherger is a 6’7 lengthy body that has joined the Chargers from Australia and has already made a difference at the net with 15 blocks.

Kyle Stodola from Ecole Salish Secondary has showed the Chargers coaching staff that he can make an immediate impact.  He has tallied 39 kills so far this season.

Eli Woldringh is a transfer from the Douglas Royals.  He is in his second PACWEST season and will be relied upon for instant offence.

The Chargers will host the Royals this weekend before they head into the holiday break.  Like the Chargers, the Royals are also 4-4 and will play their final match before the break.
