BR Volleys, who have won all Bundesliga titles since 2012, with 2015 as the only exception, and were on a 19-1 win-loss record in the league this season before the start of the championship series, were the favourites to win the final and retain the crown. However, with three of the five sets pushed into overtime, including the tie-breaker, Friedrichshafen celebrated a 3-2 (18-25, 25-27, 26-24, 25-21, 16-14) away victory and tilted the balance their way. They will now have the home court advantage in the second game to be played on Wednesday, April 20, at 20:00 local time at the ratiopharm arena in Ulm and a good chance to double their lead.
