SPARTANS GET OPENER OVER COUGARS

CALGARY, British Columbia – The No. 2 Trinity Western Spartans out lasted the No. 5 Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 in the back-and-forth contest Friday night in Calgary, Alta. The 25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-11 victory improves the Spartans to 7-0 in Canada West play, while the loss drops the Cougars to 5-2.
 
Brodie Hofer (Langley, B.C.) with 19 kills and Jesse Elser (Calgary) with 11 kills led the Spartans attack, while Chris Byam with 15 kills, and Jacob Van Geel with 11 kills led Cougars attack. TWU’s Anselm Rein (Erfurt, Germany) led the TWU offence and finished with 41 set assists, while his counterpart with the Cougars Jackson Brennan finished with 38 assists.

“It is never easy getting a win on the road in Canada West, especially against a team as good as Mount Royal. For a long time they have played us really well and they did that again tonight. So it is huge for us to get this win tonight.”
 
“I thought both teams played very clean tonight. In the fifth set we were able to crack down and get a lot of stuff blocks and that allowed us to create separation early in the fifth set.”
 
NOTABLE
• The Spartans are now 26-7 lifetime against the Cougars. The Spartans have won 12 straight CW conference games against the Cougars.
• Trinity Western finished the night hitting .406 (52-13-96), while Mount Royal finished at .300  (49-16-110).
• The Spartans had a 10-3 edge in total team blocks, and a 34-25 edge in digs.
• TWU last lost to MRU, 3-2, in Canada West conference play on November 27, 2015 in Langley.
