LANGLEY, B.C. – The Trinity Western men’s volleyball team’s Canada West journey will begin Oct. 18-19 with a trip to play MacEwan before returning to the Langley Events Centre to host Brandon in the Spartans home-opening weekend Oct. 25-26.
A date with the Bobcats to open their home schedule marks a rematch of last year’s Canada West quarter-final match-up that saw TWU win the best-of-three series in two games. The weekend set will also mark a unique reacquaintance, as several members of the Spartans and Bobcats went on a service trip together to Paraguay this past spring with the organization TeamUp.
The third week of the season for the Spartans sees a home-and-home series with UBC with TWU hosting the Thunderbirds Nov. 8 before a trip to Vancouver Nov. 9.
TWU will host the defending Canada West and U SPORTS champion Alberta Golden Bears Jan. 17-18 in what will be a rematch of last year’s conference final.
This year will feature a new playoff format that sees 10 teams qualify for the postseason. Playoffs begin with a best-of-three play-in series Feb. 21- 23, featuring the #7 seed hosting the #10 seed and the #8 seed hosting the #9 seed. A best-of-three quarterfinal round follows from Feb. 28 to March 1, with a “Final Four” format for the semifinals and bronze/gold medal games taking place the following weekend in a single location.
The regular season reflects the schedule format changes announced by the conference last October, placing increased emphasis on regional rivalries. Each school has four annual opponents they will play each season and will rotate through the remaining teams. Men’s teams will play six of eight opponents each year. This year, the Spartans won’t play Mount Royal and Winnipeg.
This year’s U SPORTS Championship will be hosted by Brandon University Mar. 21-23. With both women’s and men’s national championships hosted in the province of Manitoba – the women’s tournament is at the University of Manitoba Mar. 14-16 – there will two-week break between the men’s Canada West final and the men’s national tournament.
