Smith stepping away after three seasons

Published on

Cougars women’s volleyball Head Coach Shane Smith announced this morning that he, and his partner Donata Huebert, will be leaving their positions at Mount Royal as of May 1 for family reasons.

Shane has been at the helm of the program since August 2021. In his first season, he guided a talented squad to a 14-4 record, a CW silver medal, and MRU’s first-ever U SPORTS National Championship silver medal. In the 2022-23 season, Mount Royal tallied a 19-5 record and earned a Canada West silver medal before finishing fifth place at the U SPORTS National Championship. The team recorded eight wins and 16 losses this past season, missing out on a playoff berth.

“We are very appreciative of the time and energy Shane and Donata have given our women’s volleyball program over the past three seasons,” says Karla Karch, Director of Cougars Athletics and Recreation.  “While they are moving on from Mount Royal at the end of the month, we are thankful for their professionalism and dedication during this transitional time. We wish Shane, Donata, and their family nothing but the very best in this new journey they are embarking on.”

A search for a new women’s volleyball head coach to continue the Cougars high-performance culture and expectations will commence immediately.
