June 17, 2024: Canada will bring home silver from the NORCECA Men’s U21 Continental Championship after the United States won the gold-medal match 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 27-25) on Sunday in Nogales, Mexico.
This is the fourth gold medal for the United States in the history of the event, for an overall of 11 medals (two silvers, five bronzes). For Canada, this is the fifth silver medal – also winning two golds and three bronze medals from past tournaments.
Last night, United States led in attack points (44-29) and also finished with a comfortable lead in blocks (12-9). Both teams scored one ace. United States gave away 25 points from errors compared to Canada’s 20.
USA’s outside hitter Sterling Foley scored 16 points (13 attacks, 3 blocks) to lead the victory. Captain and outside hitter Sean Kelly contributed 12 points, all from attacks. Opposite Owen Weekes, who came in as a substitute during the first two sets and played the entire third set, was Canada’s top scorer with 13 points. More stats here.
Cuba won the bronze over Puerto Rico.
Canada also picked up several individual awards: Piers De Greeff was the second best spiker, Cody Hudson the second best blocker, Kale Fisher the best setter and libero Quintin Greenidge was named the best receiver.
