The Memorial Sea-Hawks return to the court for the first time since the 2019-20 season, when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies for a three-game series. The Sea-Hawks went winless in their 20 games during the 2019-20 season, but this time around with some new faces, and increased chemistry they will surprise some teams.
The Sea-Hawks have 8 returning players from their 2019-20 roster and have 10 players sporting the red for the first time this season. Sophomore middle- blocker Alyssa Warford led the last edition of the Sea-Hawks in kills with 139 in total on the season and 2.01 kills/set, she returns this season ready to pick up where she left off. Other returning players Claire Whiffen (1.44 K/Set), Emily Batt (0.96 K/Set), and Cecilie Dumaresque (0.81 K/Set) should create a lot of conflict at the net this weekend and throughout the course of the season. The Sea-Hawks also added through the transfer wire during the offseason, adding Junior setter Jenna Poole from the University of Brandon and Janeen Pellatt, Junior middle blocker by way of Olds College. Sea-Hawks head coach John Slauenwhite likes the mix of youth and experience that the team brings “The team is a mix of young and old, with some dynamic new faces, along with some experienced returners” said Slauenwhite. This series should be a great measuring stick for this young, up and coming Sea-Hawks squad.
The visiting Saint Mary’s Huskies will look to improve upon their 2nd place finish that they had during the 2019-20 season, all starting this weekend in St. Johns. The Huskies have one of the better middle-blocker’s in all of the AUS in returning Sophomore Olivia Bell, who’s 2.96 kills/set ranked 3rd in in the league during 2019-20. Bethany Smith, a Junior middle-blocker finished 7th two seasons ago in kills/set with 2.25, having two of their premier hitters returning will be key for the Huskies. The Huskies, like the Sea-Hawks are a relatively young team, with 9 freshmen added and only a handful of returning players, the Huskies will be an intriguing matchup for the Sea-Hawks.
The Sea-Hawks and Huskies series opens on Friday, October 29th at 7:00 PM NDT, followed by more evening action on Saturday night at 7:00 PM NDT, and the series is capped off with a 12:00 PM NDT start on Sunday.
