The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team is happy to announce their fifth recruit for the 2024-25 season with the signing of Jessica Schmid.
The Hamilton, ON. product will join the Gee-Gees as a middle while studying Biomedical Sciences.
“Jessica is another exciting recruit we are adding for 2024. She is an accomplished track athlete as well, and she plays the middle position with speed, explosive movement, and passion,” said Gee-Gees head coach, Lionel Woods.
Schmid first developed interest in the uOttawa women’s volleyball program after talking to Woods and assistant coach, Sophie Carpentier.
“Coach Lionel and Coach Sophie were very friendly, responsive, and approachable. They created an environment that felt really comfortable,” Schmid said. “The Gee-Gees program was really appealing to me because of the level of comfort I feel with the coaches, and the roster of 14 that the team usually keeps, I like the idea of a smaller group of athletes that can really support each other.”
On the court, Schmid promises to add to the team through her athletic, energetic, and competitive play all while bringing positivity and supporting her teammates.
Throughout the 2023-24 season, Schmid has been playing alongside fellow Gee-Gees recruit, Jessica Goodman. Together, the two have kept up with the Gee-Gees through social media and following along with their results.
Schmid is following in the footstep of her parents by playing university sport. Her mother played volleyball at Wilfred Laurier University, while her father played hockey for Saint Francis Xavier University. With the Gee-Gees, Schmid will have the opportunity to forge her own path as a U SPORTS athlete.
“Jessica’s impressive work ethic will fit in perfectly with our athletic, hardworking, veteran core as we head back to the OUA in 2024 and look to compete for a playoff spot as soon as possible,” said Woods.
The Gee-Gees still have nine regular season matches on the schedule, and are back in action on Jan. 9th, 2024, against Laval. The Tuesday afternoon game is in Montpetit Hall. The full season schedule can be found at GeeGees.ca.
