RECAP: Women’s volleyball splits home opening weekend

Published on

The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team was on home court for the first time this season, welcoming the Laval Rouge et Or and UQTR Patriotes to Montpetit Hall.

Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Laval was tight despite the 3-0 loss. Falling 25-21, 25-21, and 25-23, the Gee-Gees continue to prove they’re capable of competing with the best teams in the RSEQ.

“We controlled the match early and we got pushed back from a really mature, good, Laval team and we didn’t respond quick enough,” said Ottawa head coach, Lionel Woods.

Denae Bristow led the Gee-Gees with 10 kills, while Audrey Odigie and Grace McKale added six a piece.

The loss to Laval was quickly erased from the minds of the Gee-Gees as they were back in action the next day.

From the beginning, Ottawa was in charge. It was the third set where the Gee-Gees really shut down the Patriotes, holding them to only 11 points. Winning 25-22, 25-21, and 25-11, Ottawa earned their first win of the season.

Again, Bristow, Odigie and McKale’s ability at the attack line was major for the Gee-Gees, but it was Janae McKay who led the way with 14 points in the victory.

Ottawa libero, Michaela Jones added 16 digs while setter, Maxim Langevin, tallied 40 assists and 11 digs.

“We worked all summer long and trust our process and trust our skill,” Langevin said. “Today was a demonstration that we can pull it off. Our other games were close and hard fought but today went our way and that feels good.”

The Gee-Gees are headed to Montreal to take on McGill on Friday Oct. 27 and are back in Ottawa on Nov. 3 to host Montreal at 6 p.m. and Nov. 5 to host McGill at noon. Tickets are available at https://teams.geegees.ca/tickets.
