RECAP: Ottawa sweeps weekend with wins over Montreal and McGill

Published on

The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team logged key home wins over Montreal and McGill on Friday and Sunday. Ottawa defeated Montreal 3-0 on Friday night and capped off the weekend with a 3-1 win over McGill.

Against Montreal on Friday night, the Gee-Gees were led by strong performances from Audrey Odigie and Nicole Hildebrand on the wings who paced Ottawa in the win.

Odigie led the way with nine kills on the night, while Hildebrand’s three solo and one assisted block made a key difference at the net.

Two of the three sets were scrappy back-and-forth affairs (25-22 first and 25-23 third), however, the Gee-Gees were able to maintain composure throughout and close out set wins. The second set was more comfortably controlled, as Ottawa powered to a 25-18 win.

On Saturday, the Gee-Gees seized the opportunity to close the weekend with a second win, flipping the script on a 3-0 loss to McGill a week prior.

Odigie (19 kills) and Hildebrand (12 kills) once again led the way for the Gee-Gees, while the veteran presence of captain Grace McKale made a key difference stabilizing her team through the win.

The Gee-Gees started fast again, taking the first set 25-22 and the second 25-23. In the third, Ottawa fell behind and ultimately dropped the set 25-14, but rebounded the fourth to close off the match with a 25-19 win.

“We put so much time into practicing and preparing for these games, so to see all of our hard work come to life on the court and be winning is the best thing we could ask for,” said Odigie.

Following the weekend, the Gee-Gees sit at 3-3 in the RSEQ and tied with Laval for fifth place in the standings.

“I’m so proud of our kids, so excited. We had second-year kids out there doing a great job and then Grace’s leadership halfway thought the match made a huge difference,” said Gee-Gees head coach Lionel Woods. “I think the best thing is that we’re finding ourselves, we’re finding out who we are and at the same time playing really good volleyball.”

Up next, the Gee-Gees will host UQAM (4-2) on Saturday at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at tickets.geegees.ca
