RECAP: Gee-Gees fall 3-0 in disappointing loss to the Martlets

Published on

The Gee-Gees women’s volleyball team took on the McGill Martlets on Sunday with hopes of breaking McGill’s 5-game winning streak. With the RSEQ playoff race tightening up, pressure was on Ottawa to secure a win following two losses to Sherbrooke.

Falling 3-0 to McGill, Ottawa fell behind quickly after the opening set, dropping sets two and three 25-18 and 25-15 respectively.

After a timeout call, the Gee-Gees were able to claw their way back into the opening set following a 10-3 deficit. In the end, the Martlets maintained their lead and came away with the 25-23 set win.

The second set had a similar start to the first as the Gee-Gees fell behind. Despite gaining some momentum and a pair of service aces by Grace McKale, Ottawa simply couldn’t keep up with McGill.

In the final set, McGill overpowered Ottawa from start to finish. With 24 points on the board for the Martlets, the Gee-Gees refused to give up, fighting for four consecutive points. That was it for the Gee-Gees, and the set closed at 25-15.

Grace McKale led the team with four service aces and 12 kills, Alana Leung followed with six kills, and Danika Robert contributed two service aces.

The Gee-Gees have two games left on the schedule, starting with one last road matchup with the Montreal Carabins on Feb. 16.
