WATERLOO, Ont. – The Gryphons men’s volleyball team got their 2023-24 OUA regular season schedule off to a flying start with a road win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night (Nov. 3) in Waterloo. The Gryphons won 3-sets-to-1, with set scores of 22-25, 28-26, 25-16 & 25-14.
After dropping the opening set, the Gryphons stormed back to take the next each of the next three, with a tightly-contested 2nd set going Guelph’s way, 28-26, followed by convincing wins by the Gryphons in both the 3rd and 4th sets.
Leading the way for the Gryphons in their season-opening win was third-year right side, Jacob Schweyer, who finished the night with a team-high 20 points (16 kills, .577 hit percentage). All-Canadian, Jonny Pickett, racked up 19 points (14 kills, 2 blocks), with rookie setter Thomas Pugsley (40 assists) also impressing in his Gryphon debut.
The Gryphons (1-0) are right back in action once again at the University of Waterloo on Saturday (Nov. 4) as they battle the Warriors (0-1) for a second consecutive night. Game time on Saturday at U of W is set for 4pm and can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
