Kingston, ON – The Mustangs closed out the calendar year with a weekend road trip to RMC, where Western took two straight set victories.
Friday nights affair saw the ‘Stangs take 25-17, 29-27, and 25-18 set wins. The Mustangs rode their momentum into Saturday afternoon where they claimed 25-13, 25-10, and 25-16 set victories.
Jason Guy led Western with 25 kills on the weekend, while Blake Fenwick had 20. Josiah Esau had 66 assists to his name across the two games. Jack Cochran and Fenwick each had a pair of aces in Saturday’s match.
On Friday night, the two sides exchanged points to keep things close to start before the Mustangs took a lead at 10-7. The purple and white held onto their lead throughout the set and eventually took it 25-17.
In the second set, it was the hosts who took an early 3-1 lead, before the Mustangs tied things up at 7. It was a consecutive 5 points that eventually sent the score the way of Western at 10-7, eliciting a RMC timeout.
With the purple and white leading 17-14, RMC went on a four-point streak of their own to take the lead at 18-17. The two sides went back-and-forth before Western had set point at 24-23, and again at 26-25.
The Paladins kept fighting back, but the ‘Stangs eventually took the set 29-27 off an attack error.
The Mustangs eventually closed out the third set 25-18 to take their first win of the weekend.
Saturday was a similar affair.
Western took the first four points of the first set thanks to RMC errors and kills from Nicolas Folz and Amit Sayal. More point streaks would see Western take the opening set comfortably at 25-13.
Riding their momentum, Western couldn’t be stopped. The Mustangs got out to an 7-2 lead, holding the Paladins to 10 points in the second set in a 25-10 win.
With things tied at 9 in the third, five consecutive points put the ‘Stangs in good position. A kill from Fenwick closed out the set 25-16, bringing a close to the weekend.
This weekend road trip concludes the calendar year for Western, with the ‘Stangs sitting at a 6-3 record on the season. The Mustangs will return to action on Friday, January 6th, away at Guelph for an 8pm matchup.
