Mustangs power their way to 3-1 win over Queens

Published on

Kingston, ON – A night after falling in five sets, the Mustangs respond with a solid effort and drop the Queens Gaels 3-1 on Saturday night.

The Mustangs came out with an early push and opened up an early 8-3 lead. The first set would continue with Western holding the five-point lead for most of the set and Devin Gerth finished out the set win with a kill to take the 25-17 set win and a 1-0 match lead. Gerth had 5 kills in the 1st set to lead the Mustangs.

Much like the previous night, the Gaels came out in the second set looking to respond. After Queens took an early 6-point lead to move up 12-6, Western would respond with four points of their own to cut the lead to 12-10 and eventually tie the set at 14-14. Queens would respond again with a 7 to 1 run of points to move to a 21-15 lead and would finish out the set with a 25-19 win and even the match at 1-1. Gerth & Janelle Alberts led Western with 7 kills each through two sets.

In the third set, the seesaw battle continued as Western set the early pressure and went out to a 7-3 lead to force a Queens timeout.  The Mustangs would keep their foot on the pedal throughout the remainder of the set and pick up a 25-15 set win and 2-1 match lead. Ava Ebert led the Mustangs through three sets with 4 service aces, while Albert led the Mustangs with 12 kills.

The fourth set saw both sides keep the score tight throughout, Queens had an early lead but Western brought it back even at 10-10. Western would open up a four-point lead later in the set but Queens wasn’t willing to go down easily and ended up pulling the set even again at 21-21. Both sides battled late, trying to finish out the set but the Mustangs get the final tally on a Kate Van Camp service ace and pick up the 3-1 win.

Albert led the Mustangs with 15 kills and 15 digs on the night with Gerth just behind her with 14 kills. Western had 9 services aces in the win.

Next up for the Mustangs is their senior night, next Friday (February 10) at 6pm when the McMaster Marauders come to Alumni Hall. Fans can get their tickets at WesternMustags.ca/tickets, a reminder that ALL Western students get free admission when presenting their ONECard at the entrance.
