One of 14 players competing with Team Canada at the 2023 NORCECA Continental Championship this past week in Quebec, Varsity Blues women’s volleyball player Julia Murmann captured a bronze medal wearing the maple leaf at the international event.
Murmann and Team Canada defeated Cuba 3-1 in the bronze medal game on Saturday (Sept. 3) afternoon, winning with set scores of 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-16. Murmann tallied three digs from her libero position in the medal match.
“This is preparation for the Olympic qualifier – we wanted to try out some subs in a few different situations and we wanted to try out different lineups and starting rotationsm,” said Canada’s head coach, Shannon Winzer. “Coming away top three in NORCECA is excellent, but it’s also good preparation.”
Canada opened the international tournament with back-to-back 3-0 wins versus Mexico and Puerto Rico on the first two days of competition. The strong victories propelled Canada into the semifinal round where they suffered their first loss, falling 3-1 to the eventual gold medalists from the Dominican Republic.. The Dominican went on to defeat the United States in the championship final.
Joining Murmann in Quebec with Team Canada was also Varsity Blues women’s volleyball assistant coach Vincenzo Mallia who served as an assistant for the bronze medal Canada team as well.
