Box Score The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team is off to a very strong start to the 2021-22 OUA season – and it showed Friday night.
After two road wins and a bye week, the Lakers were back at home hosting the York Lions.
Nipissing made it anything but a warm welcome for the visitors, taking care of business in three games, earning the victory.
In the opening set, the teams traded points for much of the early portion, however, it was Nipissing that pulled away late.
They built up a 21-17 lead, extended it to 23-19 and claimed the set by a final score of 25-21 to go up 1-0 in the match.
The second was almost a duplicate of the first, as the Lakers came out strong, leading 9-5 early and doubling up York 16-8 at the technical timeout.
Up 19-9 late, the Lakers sealed the win outscoring York 6-3 down the stretch, winning the second game in dominating fashion, 25-12.
York had an early lead in the third set, up 12-9, but the Lakers didn’t waste any time storming back.
Down three, the Lakers scored six of the next seven points to go up 16-13 at the timeout break.
Nipissing was first to 20, as well, holding a 20-18 advantage towards the end of the third set as they looked to close out the match.
York fought back, tying the game 22-22, but the Lakers answered quickly, leading 23-22, looking for the sweep.
York refused to go away, but the Lakers were able to outlast them down the stretch, earning a 25-23 win
The straight sets win gives Nipissing a 3-0 start to the season.
The two teams are back on the court Saturday afternoon to wrap up their weekend series.
The match is set to begin at 5pm at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.
