Box Score The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team entered Saturday’s contest as one of the hottest in the OUA, having won five straight.
They picked up a solid win Friday night over the Trent Excalibur and were looking for the weekend sweep and their sixth straight victory Saturday evening.
Nipissing made no mistake in the weekend sweep, picking up their second straight 3-0 win over Trent to make it six in a row, as Nipissing improves to 9-3 on the season.
In the opening set, Nipissing jumped out to a quick lead and stayed in control the entire set, but did have to weather a late storm from the Excalibur.
Up 20-10, Trent went on a run to close the gap to 20-14 before the Lakers put the game away, winning 25-16 to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, Nipissing wasted little time getting on the right side of the score, leading Trent 9-7 early on.
They extended that lead to 15-11 midway through the second set and hit the 20-point mark, up by four.
The Excalibur pushed back late in the set, getting within two, as the Lakers led 22-20, but Nipissing was able to close things out and take the second set 25-21.
Trent wasn’t going to make it easy on the Lakers as they came to play in the third set, despite being down 2-0 in the match.
The Excalibur held an early 11-10 lead and were hanging tough with the Lakers.
With the scored tied 17-17 midway through the set, the Lakers pulled ahead with four of the next five points, hitting 20 and lead by three.
From there, the Lakers put the game and match away, outlasting Trent 5-3 down the stretch to hit 25.
Jackson Young led the way with 11 kills, while Jacob Ringma chipped in with nine in the Lakers victory over Trent.
Next for the Lakers is a bye, with their next action coming Jan. 27 and 28 in Kingston against the Queen’s Gaels.
