MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS FIGHT BACK, BUT FALL SHORT TO LIONS

Published on

After a solid road trip that saw them grab one win, but played some very strong volleyball, the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team hit their home court Friday night.

The Lakers hosted the York Lions in the first of two matches this weekend.

Despite fighting back from being down 2-0, the Lakers fell 3-2 to the Lions.

It was an evenly played match right from the first serve.

The Lakers led 17-16 midway through the first, but York stormed back late, going up 21-19 and taking the set 25-22.

In the second, York got out to a jump on Nipissing and led 18-17 midway through.

They extended that lead over the Lakers 23-21 and Nipissing was unable to comeback, falling 25-23 in the second, going down 2-0.

Nipissing refused to quit, however, mounting a comeback in the third set and sneaking out a 25-23 win to push the match to a fourth.

The Lakers carried that momentum into the fourth set, controlling the play and jumping out to a 16-12 advantage.

The pushed their lead to 22-15, but York put together a mini-run to close the gap.

Nipissing put a stop to the comeback attempt, taking the set 25-17 and pushing the match to a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth, Nipissing came out strong, going up 3-1 early and 7-4 midway through the final game of the match.

Nipissing then found themselves down 11-8, but refused to go away, tying the set at 12-12.

A last run, 3-1, by the Lions gave them the victory.

Justice Smith led the Lakers with 16 kills, while Marc Marchand 15 in the contest.

The teams are back on the court Saturday afternoon at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.

Match time is set for 4pm.
