Box Score After a heartbreaking loss where the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team did everything they could to come away with a win Friday night, the team was back in action Saturday.
The Lakers wrapped up the weekend with their second match against the McMaster Marauders, as the teams combined for a classic one night ago.
The Lakers weren’t able to grab a weekend split, falling 3-0 to the Marauders to wrap up the first matches of 2024.
In the first set, the Lakers jumped out to a small, early led, 8-7, before McMaster tied things up at 13-13 heading into the middle of the set.
After evening things up, McMaster went on an 8-3 run to go ahead 21-13, as they look to grab the first game of the match.
A late push by the Lakers wasn’t enough, as they fell 25-20 in the opening games of the match.
In the second, it was much of the same as the teams traded points.
Nipissing held an early 9-7 lead, but it was McMaster that took over when the score hit double digits, as they went ahead 17-15 and grabbed a 25-19 win to go up 2-0.
Looking to extend the match, the Lakers had to come from behind in the third set, with McMaster leading for much of the way and reaching the 20-point mark first, up by four.
McMaster put the match away, topping the Lakers 25-19 in the third set.
Justice Smith led the Lakers offence with nine kills in the match.
Nipissing remains at home, hosting the Brock Badgers next weekend for a pair of matches.
Match times are set for Friday at 8pm and Saturday at 6pm, both at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
