#2 VIU Mariners vs. #4 Douglas Royals – Saturday February 24, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
The final match of the PACWEST volleyball season features the Mariners and Royals playing for the Conference gold medal on Saturday night.
The Mariners advanced to this match by knocking off the two-time defending national champion Camosun Chargers in four sets. They dropped the first set, then came back with a very balanced attack and played outstanding defence to secure the win.
Meanwhile the Royals took down the top team in the Conference, the COTR Avalanche, in a three-set sweep. They played a flawless match beating the Avalanche by using several weapons and were quicker to the ball in every way. Owen Lam showed why is the Player of the Year hitting absolute bombs from everywhere on the court.
They played four times during the regular campaign and split the seasonal series, winning both their matches at home. The Royals are hosting the gold medal match.
They last met in this Conference title match in 2012 when the Royals won.
Incredibly the Mariners have appeared in this gold medal match five times in the last six years and have captured the Conference banner only once, in 2019. The Royals last won gold in 2014 and are making their first appearance since 2016.
