HAMILTON, Ont. – The Toronto Metropolitan University Bold men’s volleyball team went head to head against the McMaster Marauders in a quick three set game. The Bold struggled to secure the win against the OUA’s third ranked team.
The game’s first set started off in the Marauders favour. The Bold were unable to find their footing on foreign court early on in the game.
The Marauders secured the first two points to the game and while the Bold were able to break their streak a few times, they were never able to get past the maroon and grey and gain a lead. The first set ended with the Marauders leading 25-13.
The blue and gold were starting to get warmed up on the court and working on their game. The Marauders opened the second set with a service ace, but the Bold were ready to make a comeback.
Rallying back-and-forth for a few points, the Marauders started to grow their lead halfway through. Wenzel and Westell made some important plays for the Bold to stay in the game but the home team managed to swing past the Bold on a 25-18 second set.
Looking to secure a win, the Bold were off to a hot start in the third. Whenever the points would be tied up, the Bold would pass the Marauders by one, turning this set into a neck-in-neck game. It was only at the nine point mark where McMaster was able to overturn the game and start a lead against the Bold.
The last six points rallied with the Bold inching closer to the Marauders than the home team would have hoped. Tied at 19 points, Westell earned the Bold back-to-back points, eventually leading the visitors one point ahead of the Marauders.
A timeout taken by the Marauders forced the Bold to lose their groove. The Marauders secured the third set 25-22, ultimately winning the game.
The squad rests up to make a home appearance on January 26 against the Nipissing Lakers. The first serve flies at 8 p.m.
