MONTREAL – McGill’s Victoria Iannotti and Alberta’s Isaac Heslinga are the U SPORTS volleyball players of the week, for the period ending Nov. 12, 2023.
It marks the seventh major conference or national weekly award this semester for student-athletes from McGill. That group includes RSEQ honourees from volleyball (Iannotti, Oct. 14), swimming Hazem Issa (Oct. 24) and Elizabeth Ling (Oct. 11), rugby’s Martin Laval (Sept. 12) and Lauren Minns (Sept. 5), in addition to football’s Brandon Ciccarello (Sept. 5).
Iannotti, a 5-foot-9 power-hitter from St. Laurent, Que., scored 37 points as the Martlets swept a pair of key games over the weekend, defeating Sherbrooke 3-1 at home on Friday (Nov. 10), followed by a 3-2 win over Laval in Quebec City on Saturday (Nov. 11). The results left McGill just two points out of first place with a 6-3 record in the eight-team RSEQ conference. Iannotti, a 24-year-old software engineering senior, registered her points on the strength of 33 kills, one service ace, two stuff blocks and a pair of assisted blocks over nine sets. On defence, she contributed 22 digs and four assists. A co-captain with the Martlets, Iannotti played her CEGEP volleyball at College Bois-de-Boulogne before joining the university ranks in 2019.
Heslinga, an engineering junior from Orangeville, Ont., scored 36.5 points with 34 kills over two games, a 3-1 loss against Trinity Western last Friday and a 3-1 victory over the Spartans on Saturday.
