MONTREAL – Melanie Dormann registered 13 points and Rio Pesochin added a dozen more as McGill swept the Piranhas from École de technologie supérieure 3-0 in women’s volleyball exhibition play at the Centre sportif ETS, Friday. The set scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20.
The result was a fourth consecutive win for McGill, which improved to 13-5 overall, including a 9-4 mark in league play. ETS dropped to 3-4 overall.
It was also McGill’s second straight victory over ETS since the expansion team was inaugurated earlier this season. The Piranhas are playing an exhibition season of home-and-home games against each RSEQ team in anticipation of joining the conference next season.
“Due to some injuries and sickness, we went with a 6-2 system (six hitters and two setters) today, which gave us a chance to play with three hitters at the net,” said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, who took advantage of the opportunity to utilize her full bench.
Dormann, a six-foot power-hitter from Ottawa, racked up 12 kills, to go along with one ace. The fifth-year anatomical science senior added eight digs.
Pesochin, a management junior from Vancouver, B.C., contributed eight kills with a pair of aces, two blocks, one assist and 11 digs.
Teammate Selima Guidara, a political science freshman from Tunisia, added nine point and 10 digs. Brook Brown, a biology senior from Largo, Fla., had five points, 11 digs and a team-high passing ratio of 2.14 (out of 3.0).
Pacing the Piranhas was Iman Assameur and Sophie Theriault, with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
“They’re a small team but have a pretty good defence,” said Beliveau. “Most of their offence is based upon two hitters.”
The Martlets held an advantage in kills (37-28), stuff blocks (7-5) and digs (55-42), while ETS had a 9-7 edge in aces.
McGill returns to league play on Sunday (Jan. 21) when it makes the short trip across town to confront UQAM (8-6). The Martlets defeated UQAM 3-2 at home in their only previous meeting this season.
