It doesn’t get much more efficient than Markus Martens this weekend.
The third-year middle blocker recorded 13 kills on 18 attempts without an error, plus nine blocks as the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers kept their perfect season rolling.
Martens is the first MCAC male athlete of the week of 2024.
The Fiske, Sask., native had seven kills on 10 attempts with six blocks in a four-set win at Assiniboine Community College, which was a tough environment with an energized Brandon University men’s team cheering the Cougars on.
CMU also lost all-conference attacker Cam Gayleard during the match and Martens stepped up.
The following night, Martens was one of two Blazers starters to stay in the lineup, posting six kills and three blocks in a win over the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges.
“Markus’ attacking and blocking have been superb this season, and he has improved a great deal from last year and miles from his rookie season,” said Blazers coach Don Dulder. “He is a quiet guy but has a fire that burns inside, and lets his play do the talking. He plays hard, trains hard, and does whatever is asked of him. He is a coach’s dream and I’m glad we have him one more year.”
Meanwhile, the Providence University College Pilots also won a pair of matches on the weekend, improving to 7-4.
This Saturday, ACC visits CMU and USB visits PUC at 8 p.m.
MCAC men’s futsal kicked off on Sunday and the Bobcats were the one team to win both their games. PUC, USB and CMU each went 1-1 on the day.
The next match day is Saturday at BU.
