Mariners will look to defend CCAA title vs. host Élans

Match 5: Red Deer Queens 3, Lynx d’Édouard-Montpetit 2

In the first match on Day 2 the 2020 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship, the Red Deer Queens defeated the Lynx Édouard-Montpetit in five sets (24-26, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9). 

With the victory, the Queens are now on their way to the bronze semi-finals.

Gabrielle Fortin, Alissa Veilleux and Jael-Esther Telfort of the Lynx had strong outings. All three players were responsible for 65% of the team’s attacks. Setter Jeanne Martel dominated with 47 assists and Sarah-Jade Goulet was named Player of the Game for Édouard Montpetit.

The Queen’s starting outside hitters Tess Pearman and Emma Holmes accounted for 50% of the team’s total kills. Holmes was named Player of the Game for the team from Alberta. Erin Neufeldt and Alexandria Greenshie were also an important part of Red Deer’s offensive effort. In addition, rookie setter Emma Letkeman played a strong match with 36 assists and two aces.

Match 6: Camosun Chargers 3, Holland Hurricanes 0

The Camosun Chargers advanced to the CCAA bronze semi-final following a default victory over the Holland Hurricanes. 

Match 7: VIU Mariners 3, Fanshawe Falcons 1

The defending CCAA Champion VIU Mariners came out victorious over the Fanshawe Falcons in four sets (25-17, 19-25, 25-14, 25-22).         

As they did in their first match, the Mariners sang the national anthem before the start of the game.

The Fanshawe Falcons came up big in the second set and went on to win 25-19, but the Mariners came back and took the next two sets.

The Mariners offense was led by Karoline Tormena, Andrea Cankovic and Danielle Groenendijk who all together counted 41 kills which was close to 80% of the team’s total attack. Groenendijk was also named Player of the Game. Shelby Dorman-Banks was responsible for 41 assists and 12 digs.

Captain Janelle Albert led the charge on offense for the Falcons with 20 kills and 23 digs. Mattea Deleary was named Player of the Game for the Falcons; she had 13 kills. Fanshawe setter Ashley Rafferty finished the game with 40 assists. However, 28 errors and a low efficiency rating on offense cost the Falcons the game. 

The Mariners qualified for the CCAA Championship final.

Match 8: Elans de Garneau 3, Briercrest Clippers 0

In the final match of the day, the host Élans de Garneau took on the Briercrest Clippers with a trip to the CCAA Championship game on the line. The Élans dominated the match in three straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-20).

While the Élans won an important first set, the second set was a hard fought battle from which they came back with a 5-point deficit; in the third and final set, however, their game really came together. 

The Élans’ offence was led by four players who made 35 kills of 41 total attacks. The third-year player, Laurence Flamand, dominated with 12 kills and six digs. Roxanne St-Amand stood out with nine kills and a .450 attack percentage. Jade Marquis finished the day with six kills and two aces. Team captain and setter, Rachel St-Amand had 31 assists and nine digs. The series of blistering fast serves of first-year rookie Maïka Bourgeois-Daigle made its mark in the second set victory. 

Rebecca Garner completed the match for the Clippers with 17 kills. Team captain Ashley Erickson had 29 assists and eight digs while Reece Harder had eight kills.

Marie-Noëlle Tremblay of the Élans was named Player of the Game.

Garneau earned the right to battle against the Mariners in the gold-medal final.
