Mariners to meet Royals in CCAA Championship final

Match 5: Lynx d’Édouard-Montpetit Lynx 3, MSVU Mystics 1

After falling to the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in the opening set, 25-23, the Lynx rebounded with wins of 26-24, 25-12 and 25-19 to take the victory in four-sets.  They advance to the bronze medal semi-finals on Sunday morning with the win.

Statistically, the Lynx were stronger in the match in most major categories.  Anica Pineault led the match with 20 kills, while Ariane Provencher led the way with 39 assists and Ilona Milan had 28 digs.  Pineault, Justine Dubreuil (Lynx), Nicole Rector (Mystics) and Marcy MacNeil (Mystics) each had three service aces in the match.

Milan (Lynx) and MacNeil (Mystics) were each selected as the 4Imprint Players of the Match.

Match 6: Les Rouges de Saint-Boniface 3, Holland Hurricanes 1

The second bronze medal quarter-final match of the day saw Les Rouges des Université de Saint-Boniface take down the hosts from Holland College in four-sets to advance to the semi-finals.

After dropping the first to the Hurricanes (23-25), victories of 25-23, 25-18 and 30-28 propelled Les Rouges to the victory.

Valeria Gonzalez (Les Rouges) led the match in kills with 17, while her teammate, Samuelle Lemoine led the match in assists with 38.  Jenna MacFarlane (Hurricanes) recorded a match-high 28 digs while Sam Gerbig (Holland) and Morgan White (Holland) each had five service aces in the match.

Samuelle Lemoine (Les Rouges) and Samantha Gerbig (Hurricanes) were named the 4Imprint Players of the Match.

Match 7: VIU Mariners 3, vs Red Deer Queens 0

The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners punched their tickets to the 2022 CCAA National Championship Game on Saturday evening in convincing fashion, defeating the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens in straight sets.

A 25-23 first set victory was followed by a 25-19 win in the second set.  A back-and-forth final set saw the Mariners earn the win by a score of 26-24.

The Mariners led the way statistically, with Yevgeniya Lytvynenko leading the match with 21 kills while teammate Linnea Brickwood led with 44 assists.  Brickwood, Kayla Passmore, and Danielle Groenendijk all finished the match with two service aces.  Vanessa Loos (RDP) finished the match with 17 digs.

Lytvynenko (VIU) and Tess Pearman (RDP) were named the 4Imprint Players of the Match.

Match 8: Douglas Royals 3, Humber Hawks 0

The Douglas College Royals have made it an all PACWEST conference National Championship Game on Sunday after advancing with a straight-sets win over the Humber College Hawks.

Set wins of 25-20, 25-13 and 29-27 gave the Royals the victory on Saturday evening.

Talia Attieh (Douglas) led the way offensively in the match with 15 kills, while teammate Jane Kepler recorded a match-high 28 assists.  Olivia Cesaretti (Douglas) picked up three service aces in the win while Alex Lachapelle (Humber) recorded 12 digs.

Jane Kepler (Douglas) and Alex Krstonosic (Humber) were the 4Imprint Players of the Match. 

Day 3 preview

Sunday will begin with two bronze medal semi-final matches. First at 10am, Les Rouges des Université de Saint-Boniface will challenge the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, followed by a 12pm match featuring the Cégep Édouard-Montpetit Lynx taking on the Humber College Hawks.  The two winners of these matches will meet in the CCAA National Bronze Medal match at 5pm. 

The CCAA National Championship match, taking place at 7pm, will feature the Vancouver Island University Mariners taking on the Douglas College Royals in a PACWEST conference final rematch. The Royals were victorious earlier in the month, winning the conference title match in four-sets.
