A member of the York University Lions women’s volleyball coaching staff has been selected to lead the best young Canadian women ahead of a busy summer tournament season for Volleyball Canada.

Lead assistant coach Shanice Marcelle will join the staff for the 2022 Canada Cup in Calgary, Alta. Later this summer. Marcelle, who will be entering her fifth year on the Lions coaching staff, is joining a staff lead by Shane Smith of Mount Royal, and Nathan Janzen of McMaster.

She joins the staff on the heels of a season of improvement for the Lions under Jennifer Neilson‘s tutelage. They posted a 7-5 record and took conference finalist Toronto to a fifth set in a marathon game at York in the latter half of the season.

Marcelle played the indoor game collegiately with the UBC Thunderbirds, winning five straight CIS Championships (2009-13) as well as two CIS Player of the Year awards (2011, 2013). In 2011 she was named CIS Championship MVP and in 2013 she won the BLG Award for CIS Female Athlete of the Year across all sports.

Marcelle joined the senior national team in 2011 and in 2013 she began playing professionally in Dresden, Germany, and in 2014 she helped her team win the league championship, as well as representing Canada at the FIVB World Championship. She graduated from UBC with a degree in kinesiology.
