SASKATOON, SK – Volleyball Canada has announced the 2023 Under 21 men’s roster and Huskie fans will be excited to see Saskatchewan’s Isaiah Mamer and Lucas Musschoot suit up for Team Canada this summer.
The first year outside hitter from Wilke, SK, Isaiah Mamer had an impressive rookie season with the men’s volleyball team, with 152 kills and 21 service aces this season. After an early injury in the 2022-23 season, Grenfell, SK’s Lucas Musschoot turned to improving his techniques as a middle, impressing Team Canada coaches with his dedication to his skill development.
Mamer and Musschoot will be joined by their Head Coach Sean McKay, who is an assistant coach for the U21 team. “Anytime you get to represent your country, it adds something so special to the game,” commented McKay. “While this team at its roots is a development program, it’s an incredible opportunity to coach these young athletes and play against some of the best talent in the world.”
It’s an extra special opportunity for Coach McKay, as he’ll have the opportunity to coach two of his athletes at the national level. “Both Isaiah and Lucas will benefit immensely from the high-performance environment that being on a national team offers. It’s not often our Huskie student-athletes get to experience what training and competing like a professional feels like. For the next two months, they will focus on their skill development and becoming better players. I’m excited to see what they can do under those circumstances, and how this summer will develop them as players heading into the 2023-24 U SPORTS season”.
Canada West is well represented, with eight athletes being named to the U21 team, including:
UBC Thunderbirds – Mason Greves, Reeve Gingera
UBCO Heat – Renn Petryk
Alberta Golden Bears – Jacob Sargent
Manitoba Bisons – Spencer Grahame, Jonah Dueck
Saskatchewan Huskies – Isaiah Mamer, Lucas Musschoot
The U21 team will be competing in two international tournaments this summer. First up is the NORCECA Men’s U21 Pan America Cup in Havana, Cuba from June 3 – 11, 2023, followed by the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship in Manama, Bahrain from July 7 – 16, 2023.
