The York University Lions men’s volleyball team sought redemption in a rematch against the Western Mustangs following a tough 3-0 loss to them on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mustangs made an aggressive start, claiming the opening set with a commanding 25-18 score, taking an early lead of 1-0.
The Lions showed improvement in the second set but ultimately succumbed 25-15, trailing 2-0 in the match.
The third set was tightly contested as the Lions aimed to avoid a sweep. After several close exchanges, York’s Alex Ko sealed the set with a winning kill, securing a 25-22 victory for the Lions and closed in the overall match score to 2-1.
The Lions clinched the fourth set 25-21 to force the game into a fifth set off a Shaun Schonert kill, one of his 13 of the game, enabling York’s late stage comeback.
The tiebreaker was tense as both teams gave maximum effort, while Ko set a seasons high 17 digs, but the Mustangs secured a 15-6 score, ultimately clinching the match 3-2.
LOOKING AHEAD:
In search of a second win this season, the Lions will return home on Saturday, Nov. 24 when they welcome in the Guelph Gryphons to Tait Mckenzie Center. The game is set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
