The York University Lions men’s volleyball team was looking to earn a second straight win over their city rivals, the TMU Bold at Mattamy Athletic Centre. This followed a five-set thriller from Friday night which saw the Lions come away victorious to move their unbeaten streak to five and run their record to 8-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Unfortunately for the Lions, this match got off to a much different start from Friday’s. The Bold scored four of the game’s first five points. They led 21-10 at one point late in the opening set, and took that by a 25-13 margin.
The second set also saw TMU take control early in the set and lead throughout. The Lions put together a rally late in the second to cut the Bold lead to 21-18, but TMU then reeled off four of the set’s final five points to earn a 25-19 win and go up 2-0.
With the Lions on the brink, they battled hard in the third set to try and extend the match. They took the lead at 13-12 off an Andrew Tauhid ace, and tied it at 14-14 and 15-15, but five straight points put the Bold up 22-16. From there they would go on to take the third set, 25-17 and earn the straight-sets win over the Lions.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will try to begin a new win streak next Saturday, Jan. 21, when they return home to face the McMaster Marauders at Tait McKenzie Centre. First serve for that one is at 6:00 pm.
