The York University Lions women’s volleyball team fell 3-1 to one of the hottest teams in the province, the McMaster Marauders, Wednesday night in Hamilton.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lions started off slow as the Marauders went up 5-0 early in the first set. McMaster carried their lead throughout the rest of the set, taking it by a 25-15 count to take the lead 1-0.
Olivia Kim’s wonderful spike from the left gave the Lions a crucial point at the start of the second set to bring the Lions up ahead. But the Marauders’ insistence held on, tying on points constantly throughout the set.
Near the end of the second set, Chiara Da Silva made plays in the middle of the court to set-up Alisa Trubyuk and Christina Piccinin on consecutive points, which put the Lions ahead by 20-14. The second set then ended by 25-20 in favor for the Lions, with Amarai Endes leaping high to execute the final blow against the Marauders
In the third set the Marauders gained the upper hand early. The Lions rallied to tie it at 15-15 thanks to a kill from Endes after a back and forth rally between the teams. Nevertheless the Lions fell short in the third set, losing 25-20 to go down 2-1 in the match.
The Lions took a 12-6 lead in the fourth, as they forced the several Marauder errors. However, late in the set McMaster roared as they retook the lead, 17-16. That rally ultimately propelled them to a 25-20 fourth-set victory and a 3-1 win.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Next, the Lions will host the TMU Bold at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday, January 21. The match is set to start at 8:00 pm.
