With a chance to go undefeated in the first half of the season, the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team welcomed to the Ryerson Rams back to the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.
After a hard-fought victory Friday night, the Lakers were aiming for the weekend sweep which would give them a perfect 6-0 record heading into the Christmas break.
After three sets, it was the Lakers, who came away with the win 3-0 victory, giving the team an undefeated first half.
The first set was back and forth for the early part and it took a late push for the Lakers to come out on top.
Nipissing was up 8-7 early and stayed in the lead by the technical timeout.
With the score tied 20-20 late in the set, a 5-2 run for the Lakers gave them the edge and the first set win, putting them in the driver’s seat.
In the second set, the Lakers took an early 10-8 lead and then proceeded to outscore the Rams 6-3 heading into the technical timeout
As part of a 13-5 run, the Lakers led 20-13 late in the set and cruised to a 25-16 win to go up two sets.
Nipissing jumped out to an early 7-5 lead in the third set.
At the technical timeout, it was Nipissing who led 16-12.
Looking to close things out, the Lakers grabbed a late 20-15 lead as they continue to roll, keeping the Rams at bay.
Holding on to the lead throughout the set – and match overall – Nipissing picked up a 25-17 win in the third set, taking care of business and ensuring the victory.
With the 3-0 win, the Lakers cap off one of the best semester’s in the program’s history.
The first half of the season wraps up with the Lakers going 6-0 and sitting in top spot in the division.
