When Nicholas Hoag said Tokyo, he meant the Olympic Games. He and his teammates from the Canadian national team will try to reach this goal in less than 20 days at the qualification tournament.
We will see how far can Canada go and are they able to reach the Olympics. Their rivals in Pool F will be Argentina, Finland and China.
Hoag also was one of the players who played in Szczecin last season. We couldn’t resist asking him about this topic at the start of the interview.
The last season has been the real rollercoaster for you. The project in Szczecin seemed to be making a progress but suddenly, all disappeared. How did you feel at that moment?
“The Szczecin project was very ambitious and great. I’m still not 100% sure what happened behind the scenes. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up working out after a great start to our season with a great group of athletes.“
Do you think that Szczecin would fight for the championship title?
“I think so. We started the season with a loss but had lots of wins after that. The group had individual maturity and it was starting to mold into team maturity which was making us play better and better. I would have loved to see how far we could have gone in the Polish championship!“
After the Polish team, you played in Perugia. How would you rate your experience there?
„I had the great opportunity to find a spot onto the Perugia team which was one of the best teams in the world. Amazing talent but also great people running the club. As much as I am disappointed about Szczecin, I am happy I spent the rest of the year in a great club like Perugia.“
For the season 2019/2020, you will be playing in Poland again. Why did you choose Resovia?
”I’ve talked to many people about Resovia, I heard great things throughout different people which makes it a very safe place to play. But the biggest reason I signed there is to compete for the Polish title. It is a great championship and Resovia deserves to be in the top of the league. There will be a big competition but it’s more satisfying to compete for the top spot when it is difficult. It’s a very ambitious club and I am very eager to start the season.“
How far Resovia can go in the next season since the previous one was unsuccessful for this team?
“I think we have a great team for next season. Lots of depth. It will be interesting to see how far we will go. But I see us being able to beat any team in the league. I’m also very excited to meet the fans. I heard great things about then, loyalty and support!“
The Canadian men’s national team will soon fight for the spot at the Olympic Games. What are the chances of Canada in Pool F?
“For the national team, we have one goal in mind: to qualify for Tokyo. We are preparing the best way we can to face our opponents. I think we have a good chance if we play our volleyball. We’ve been playing pretty well during VNL, but I think it will be even harder during the qualifier since the pressure is totally different. I am looking forward to the competition nonetheless and, hopefully, get the ticket to Tokyo 2020.“
