SASKATOON, Sask. – Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex, the Mount Royal Cougars earned a 3-1 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies to sweep the weekend series.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-2 on the season and sit 9th in the Canada West standings while the Huskies drop to 1-3 and hold onto 10th.
The Dogs got off to a strong start, opening with a 6-2 run before the Cougars responded with nine straight points to take an 11-6 lead. From there it was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. Tied at 24 apiece the Cougars took the go-ahead point before three straight points from Saskatchewan gave the home team a a 1-0 set lead.
In the second set, the Dogs and Cougars continued to trade blows before an 8-3 run gave the Huskies an 18-13 lead. The Dogs were two points away from taking the second set before four straight points cut the lead to one. From there is was another tightly contested battle between the two programs, leading a 30-30 stalement at which point the Cougars scored twice to even the match at two sets apiece.
The third would once again see neither team able to hold on to any sustained momentum until a 21-23 Dogs lead sparked four straight from the visitors to take the set lead.
With momentum and a lead in the match, the Cougars earned a 25-21 win in the fourth to capture the win and the series sweep.
For the Huskies, the effort was let by Ella Milne who totaled 12.0 points and Taryn Hannah who finished with 11.5. For the Cougars, Bronwynn Davies-Neir recorded a game-high 18.0 points followed by teammate Emma Boyd with 14.5.
The Dogs return to action next weekend, with a road series against the Brandon Bobcats.
