Huskies defeat Axewomen in four sets in season opener

WOLFVILLE, NS – The Saint Mary’s Huskies edged the Acadia Axewomen 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23) to open the AUS women’s volleyball season on Friday night.

Looking like it was going to be a five-set match, the Huskies bounced back down 23-22 late in the fourth set to take it 25-23 and the match 3-1.

Megan Bruhm (Hubley, NS) led the Huskies’ offence with a game-high 14 kills, one ace and three blocks. Emilia Mikanovich (Minsk, Belarus) wasn’t far off Bruhm’s numbers with 12 kills and a block. Their offence was run through setter Taylor Lougheed (Calgary, Alberta), who finished with a game-high 34 assists, while also picking up 10 digs.

For the Axewomen they were led by Jenna Lake’s 13 kills and an ace. Charlotte Dean had 30 assists and four digs on the night to quarterback the offence.

Defensively Wesley-Ann Bailey and Erica Fisher each had two blocks, while Rebecca Dorsey led the team in digs with 17. SMU was led by Morgan Hoskins who finished with 14 digs.

The two teams meet again on Saturday night in Halifax, with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Homburg Centre. GET TICKETS
