An Avalanche Sweep
The top ranked COTR Avalanche made quick work of the Camosun Chargers this weekend with a pair of sweeps.
First off on Friday they beat the Chargers 25-20, 25-18 and 25-23. Offensively Diego Policarpo was the focal point with 14 kills and had two blocks and Dylan Annala added eight kills to give them a different look. Setter Boston Thiessen ran the offence spreading the ball around for 23 assists.
Saturday, the Avs pick up where they left off taking the Chargers down 25-21, 32-30 and 25-21.
Policarpo and Annala once again led the offence with 13 kills each and Gustavo Bertoli chipped in with nine. Thiessen added to his impressive rookie stats with another 38 assists in the win.
Next weekend the Avalanche (12-2) continue their homestand and host the VIU Mariners (9-3) in a first-place showdown. The Chargers (6-6) head home and prepare to host the Capilano Blues (2-10).
Mariners Crown Royals
The VIU Mariners earned the weekend sweep over the Douglas Royals in Nanaimo.
On Friday night the Mariners beat the Royals in four very exciting sets 27-25, 27-25, 24-26 and 25-22. They had a very balanced attack behind the setting of Owen Dyck to keep the Royals defence guessing. Daniel Mascarenhas finished with 15 kills, Jake Stobbe had 14 and Rylan Van Kootan added 10 kills, 11 digs and three aces.
Then on Saturday the Mariners completed the sweep winning in three quick ones: 25-23, 25-11 and 25-21. Van Kootan played another important role in this match with 15 kills and seven digs. Mascarenhas added nine kills and Stobbe had eight.
Next weekend the Mariners (9-3) visit the COTR Avalanche (12-2) for a first-place showdown and the Royals (5-9) welcome the CBC Bearcats (4-8).
