The Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team defeated the York Lions 3-2 (17-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-17, 15-13) Thursday (Nov. 10) evening at the Goldring Centre Kimel Family Field House.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues’ win was led by veteran outside hitter Hope Kotun with 19 kills and setter Jasmine Safar with 41 assists.
Faced with a tough start, the Blues dropped the opening set 25-17, but immediately bounced back in the second. Maintaining close to a double-digit lead throughout, Toronto was able to even the match with a 25-17 win of their own.
The third set was tightly-contested with lead changing hands on several occasions. In the end, the Lions gained the advantage late, winning 26-24.
Beginning the fourth set strong, the Blues offence set the tone as they immediately jumped out to a 6-0 lead and stayed ahead for the rest of the set, taking it 25-17.
With both sides looking to secure the match, the fifth set was a battle. The Lions staying in the lead for most of the first half, however, the Blues took over after the switch to finish off their first win of the season.
Second-years Julia Murmann and Natalia Souza collectively made 37 digs in the victory.
