HOFER SETS SPARTANS RECORD IN VICTORY OVER DINOS

Published on

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Outside Brodie Hofer (Langley, B.C.) set a Spartans record for hitting percentage to lead the No. 2 Trinity Western Spartans to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Dinos Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 win keeps TWU on top in Canada West standings at 6-0 while keeping Calgary winless at 0-4.

Hofer broke 21 year old Spartans record for hitting percentage in a match with .697 (26-3-33), minimum 20 attempts. The previous record was set in the 2000-01 season by Cory Baum at .696 (17-1-23) in a 3-1 win against the Regina Cougars on January 26, 2001.

Hofer added four service aces and two blocks to his historic numbers, while Jesse Elser (Calgary) added 15 kills and two aces to the Spartan totals. Liam Kuppe with 11 kills led the Dinos attack.

Mathias Elser (Calgary) led the Spartans attack and finished the night with 47 assists, while Anders Bouck led the Dinos attack with 28 assists.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Adam Schriemer
“Calgary’s middle blockers are awesome and because of that we got nothing going in the middle. But because of that we got a lot of space for Brodie and Jesse, and those guys were freaky efficient. Brodie hitting those numbers is just crazy.”

“It’s kind of a flawed game offensively because of our volume and efficiency differences, but when Brodie and Jesse spike that well it gets us through.”

“The challenge now heading into the bye week is to win bye week. We always talk about that the bye week isn’t an off week, it is a chance for us to get better and we have to do that next week as we have a tough weekend at Mount Royal coming up.”

NOTABLE
• The Spartans are now 50-28 lifetime against the Dinos. TWU is currently on a 15 match-winning streak against Calgary.
