MONTREAL – Maxime Blanchard of Pelham, Ont., and Elyssa Lajmi, who hails from Thionville, in France, are the McGill University athletes of the week, presented by Restaurant Poulet Rouge, for the period ending Nov. 2, 2024.
Blanchard, a 5-foot-11, 184-pound defenceman with the men’s hockey team, scored five points in two victories by the McGill men’s hockey team last weekend. The 23-year-old management junior scored the opening goal and added three assists in a 9-3 victory over the visiting Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday. He also had an assist in Friday’s 5-2 victory over Ottawa at Place Bell. Blanchard was recruited to McGill in 2022 out of the QMJHL, where he patrolled the blueline for Sherbrooke.
Lajmi, a six-foot power-hitter with the women’s volleyball squad, scored a team-leading 30 points and 29 digs in two weekend victories, a 3-0 sweep over visiting UQAC on Friday, followed by a 3-1 win at UQAM on Sunday. The 22-year-old newcomer is a graduate certificate student in English and Communications. Over her two matches, she combined for 27 kills, two solo stuffed blocks and a pair of assisted blocks, to go along with four assists. Lajmi enrolled at McGill this year after graduating from Win Sport School, a management-focussed institution based in France.
McGill athlete of the week award recipients receive a gift certificate from Poulet Rouge, serving healthy and nutritious meals since 2017. All students can get a 15% discount at the Poulet Rouge McGill location upon presentation of their student ID card.
