VANCOUVER – The Canada West Volleyball Players of the Week put on a show in Kamloops over the weekend where UBC Okanagan’s Madelyn Hettinga helped keep the Heat undefeated, and Thompson Rivers’ Samuel Elgert led the WolfPack to its first win of the season.
Hettinga, a rookie middle for UBCO, led the way as the Heat took a pair of games on the road against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack to start the season 4-0.
The Kelowna, B.C. native had 10 attacks in Friday’s 3-0 win, putting eight of them away for kills. Hettinga added four aces and three block assists in the match.
In the rematch on Saturday, Hettinga was efficient on the attack again. The Human Kinetics student recorded kills on 13-of-17 attacks to go along with three more aces and five digs in a 3-1 UBCO victory.
The Heat (4-0) will have a weekend off before putting their undefeated record on the line against the UBC Thunderbirds (1-1) December 3-4 in Kelowna.
Third-year setter Samuel Elgert had a night to remember on Saturday, leading the WolfPack to their first win of the season with a triple-double in the stats sheet.
Elgert put up 28 assists, 13 kills and 12 digs in the 3-2 Thompson Rivers win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday night. The Edmonton, Alta. product took just twenty swings in the match, finishing the night with a .600 kill percentage.
On Saturday, Elgert recorded 20 assists and a pair of kills to go along with two block assists and two digs in a 3-0 loss to UBCO.
The WolfPack (1-3) take on the Fraser Valley Cascades (0-4) on the road this weekend. Both games will be available on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
