CCAA Bronze Semi-Final: Humber Hawks 3, Fanshawe Falcons 2

In a rematch of the OCAA championship match, the Fanshawe Falcons battled the Humber Hawks in the other bronze semi-final.

Marcus Morgan started off strong for the Hawks, putting down five kills in the opening set, while Tanner Paterson recorded three for the Falcons. The Falcons prevailed in the opening set 25-23. The Ontario champion and wildcard teams showed again why their battles are so tight and highly competitive as the Hawks took the second 27-25. Zack Admans and Elliott Leslie both added a pair of kills for Fanshawe, and Teyven Blackmore put up four for Humber.

It wasn’t all offensive on the court though, as Kyle Gray-Phillips added three digs in the third set, for a total of 11, and Matthew Battad dug up four more, for nine on the match. The Falcons regained control of the game, winning the match 25-21, and taking a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

History repeats itself as the Hawks tie the game at 2-2 with a 25-20 win, forcing another five-set match-up, this time the winner plays another day. Admans added three kills in the set for Fanshawe and Maximum Crowder matched him for Humber.

While both teams were hungry for the chance to play for bronze, the Hawks were hungrier and clinched their spot to play for bronze with a 15-10. Humber will play VIU at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

CCAA Bronze Quarter-Final: Fanshawe Falcons 3, STU Tommies 2

In the opening match of Day 2, the first bronze quarter-final featured the Fanshawe Falcons and the STU Tommies.

The Tommies took the first set in a close battle 25-23, but were out-played in the next two sets, dropping the pair 25-15 and 25-19. The team didn’t give up as they pulled out another close victory 25-22, to tie the game and force a fifth and final set. In the end, Fanshawe prevailed 15-13 to advance to the bronze semi-final. The Tommies will play for seventh/eighth.

From the Falcons, middle blocker Jayden Crowther was named 4Imprint Player of the Game with nine kills, four blocks, and seven block assists. Raphael Fiset, setter out of Calgary, Alberta, put up four kills and added 11 digs to earn Player of the Game for the Tommies.

CCAA Semi-Final: Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks 3, Humber Hawks 2

The other semi-final tonight, the NAIT Ooks are heading to the championship game for the first time in their team’s history.

The Ooks stunned last year’s silver medalists in the first two sets as they dominated early, winning 25-16 and 25-16. The Hawks weren’t going down easy and changed the momentum in the third. The clawed their way to victory 25-20, putting a damper on the Ooks that carried over into the next set. Humber didn’t back down to NAIT and took the fourth set 25-19.

In a back and forth fifth set nail biter, the Ooks were able to secure the final two points for victory and advance to the gold medal game with a 16-14 win.

Josh Watson recorded 13 kills and five service aces which earned him Player of the Game for the Ooks. With 16 kills, the Hawks Player of the Game was Marcus Morgan.

The Ooks will play for gold against the Titans on Sunday at 5 p.m., while the Hawks will play in a bronze semi-final against the Falcons on Saturday at 7 p.m.

CCAA Quarter-Final: Titans de Limoilou 3, Fanshawe Falcons 1

In the second championship quarter-final, the RSEQ champs, Titans de Limoilou, faced off against the Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association (OCAA) wildcard, Fanshawe Falcons.

The Titans stunned the Falcons right from the start in a back-and-forth opening set, claiming the opening match 25-23. The Falcons answered back with a three-point victory of the second set 25-22. Limoilou stepped on the pedal the next two matches, winning both (25-15, 25-21).

The Titans will face the Mariners in the first semi-final at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Falcons will play in the bronze quarter-final versus the Tommies on Friday at 12 p.m. Tanner Paterson was named 4Imprint Player of the Match for Fanshawe with 13 kills and an ace. Libero Zachary Desfosses contributed seven digs to pick up the Titans Player of the Match.

CCAA Quarter-Final: Humber Hawks 3, Camosun College Chargers 1

In the final match of opening day, the Humber Hawks looked strong on the floor and the Camosun Chargers came close to matching them in the opening set. The Hawks proved their strength, taking it 25-23 and followed up with a 25-16 dominant second set victory.

The Chargers picked up momentum in the third set, leading most of the way and ending up securing the battle 27-25. Camosun continued to hold their own against the powerhouse, but lost out 25-19.

Kyle Stodola accounted for 11 kills during the match and earned the Chargers 4Imprint Player of the Match. Hawks setter, Josh Nicolson, picked up the accolade for the Hawks with his stellar performance. The Chargers now face the Providence Pilots on Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the second bronze quarter-final, while the Hawks advance to the semi-final against the NAIT Ooks at 8 p.m. on Friday.
