CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball program announced its first signing for next year’s roster on Wednesday.
Head coach Christine Biggs secured the signing of one of the top prospects in the nation in Sophia Hansen.
Hansen is a 6-foot-2 outside hitter from Edmonton. She is in her final year at Strathcona Christian Academy and has played at the highest levels – including playing a key role with Team Canada’s U19 squad that finished sixth in the world at the Pan American Cup in Puerto Rico this past summer.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sophia Hansen to our 2024-2025 roster,” Biggs said. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Sophia over the last two summers with Team Canada, and it’s apparent she’s got the work ethic, drive, and physical and competitive potential to play this game at the highest level. Sophia brings both size and control to the outside position. She’s got a great sense of humor and love for the game, paired with being a focused and intentional learner: she aligns exceptionally with our Dinos team culture and values.
“We’re grateful to part of Sophia’s journey and know she’s destined for great things – both within our Dinos program and beyond.”
Hansen – who intends to major in Kinesiology – was named the 2022 Volleyball Alberta Athlete of the Year and is the latest Calgary recruit to be selected to join the National Excellence Program. She has strong family ties to volleyball, as both her parents played in university, with her mom playing for the Dinos. Hansen also plays at the club level with Pandas Volleyball, helping the U17 team win gold at provincials last April.
“I chose U of C because it matches my academic and athletic goals,” Hansen said. “The team culture is great and I am excited to join this program next year.”
