GAELS FIGHT PROVES TOO STRONG FOR LIONS IN 3-0 SWEEP

Published on

The York University Lions women’s volleyball team travels to Kingston for a face-off against the Queen’s Gaels. Eager to bounce back after a challenging weekend split with back-to-back losses against the Waterloo Warriors last week, the team is determined to secure their first victory of 2024 and their second win of the overall season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The initial set showcased Gael’s dominance, consistently adding points to the scoreboard. A crucial kill by Alisa Trubyuk brought York to a 5-5 tie, levelling the playing field. York’s Victora Herrington stepped up with a much-needed kill, injecting some life into the Lions’ game. Her efforts continued with a second kill, bringing the score to 23-16. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to revive the Lions as the set concluded 25-17, with Queens leading 1-0 in the overall game.
  • The second set began similar to the first, with initial Gaels dominance. However, a swift turnaround occurred when Quincy Johnson secured a crucial kill during a 5-point spree for the Lions, putting the score to 11-10 and prompting a timeout from the hosts. Unexpectedly, Queens regained momentum, securing back-to-back points and edging past the Lions once again. Following a final kill by Queen’s Hannah Duchesneau, the Gaels claimed this set 25-19, much to the disappointment of the Lions and securing an overall lead of 2-0 in the game.
  • The Lions were hopeful for a comeback in the following set, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Despite the extreme effort and securing back-to-back kills from Amarai Endes, their initial lead slipped away. Brooklyn Parliament’s successful kill aimed to level the playing field, but the game remained heavily tilted at 9-20 in favour of Queens. The set concluded 25-12 and with this result, Queens secured a clean sweep, winning the overall game 3-0.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions are set to make a quick turnaround tomorrow, seeking redemption in a weekend split with the Gaels. The first serve flies at 6:00p.m.
