Regan Fathers of the Red Deer Kings has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year.
He received the award this evening at the 2019 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship banquet, hosted by Red Deer College in Red Deer, AB.
“Regan was outstanding for Red Deer this season as he dominated the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC),” said Ray Sarkis, CCAA Men’s Volleyball Convenor. “This is a special year for Regan as he closes out his career in the ACAC and CCAA, and to do it on his home court – it will be a special event for him and his teammates as they host the National Championship.”
In his final season of eligibility, the fifth-year right side sparked the Kings to a strong second half. Red Deer finished second in the always tough ACAC South Division with an 18-6 record.
The ACAC Player of the Year and CCAA All-Canadian led the conference with 6.1 points per set and 5.37 kills per set.
“Regan is an outstanding student-athlete with a compete level and athleticism that is unparalleled at the ACAC and CCAA level,” said Red Deer Kings head coach Aaron Schulha of his Australian captain.
“Throughout the season, there have been many instances where he has simply put his team on his back and put up staggering and sometime ridiculous numbers in order to help his team achieve victories over some of the toughest competition in the ACAC and CCAA.”
Throughout his time at Red Deer College, Fathers has been involved in coaching with RDC’s volleyball summer camps as well as the Sylvan Lake and Jasper camps. He has also assisted with the Kings Volleyball Club programs.
Fathers, who is a member of the Australian National U23 squad, led the Kings to CCAA National Championship titles in 2016 and 2017. This week, he has the opportunity to cap his collegiate career in style as Red Deer hosts its first CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship since 1987.
