EDMONTON – Hamish Hazelden hammered home another 14 kills to lead the seventh-ranked University of Calgary Dinos men’s volleyball team to a convincing 3-0 sweep of MacEwan Saturday night from David Atkinson Gym.
The Dinos completed their season sweep of the Griffins, dropping just three sets in the six match wins, capped by an emphatic showing Saturday, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.
Hazelden led all players with his 14 kills on an impressive .440 hitting percentage. The fifth-year also had a pair of aces to go with four blocks.
Jackson Meier once again had a nice performance, finishing on six of his nine swings while also contributing with four blocks.
Tomas Sorra dished out 23 assists and had a team high seven digs in the win.
Alexei Walisser led the way for MacEwan with 11 kills.
After letting the Griffins hang around most of the first, the Dinos took an 18-17 late lead and put their foot on the gas. Meier started it off with a kill before back-to-back blocks made it 23-18, all but closing out the first for the Dinos.
Calgary once again showed it knows how to finish in the second. Leading 20-18, the Dinos got one kill from Parker Siroishka and three from Hazelden to quickly give themselves a 2-0 overall lead.
It was much of the same in the third. MacEwan hung close until late, where Calgary once again showed their poise and composure. Leading 21-19, Erik Godwin hammered one home before Jacob Reid closed things out with kill to complete the sweep.
The Dinos will now turn their attention to postseason play. With a 13-5 overall record, the Dinos finish second in the Canada West Central Division, slotting them into Pool C, where they will travel to East Division top seed Winnipeg, starting March 4.
