CALGARY – After dropping the semester opener on the road to the Fraser Valley Cascades, the University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team (9-5) will look to shift their momentum at home for a two-game set against the Winnipeg Wesmen (9-5).
All the action will take place at the Jack Simpson Gym, with the first serve on Friday set for 7:45 p.m. and continuing at 5 p.m., Saturday
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. FOUR-WAY TIE – After coming up short last weekend at Fraser Valley, the Dinos now find themselves in a four-way tie for third in Canada West competition with Mount Royal, Winnipeg and the Cascades all sitting at 9-5.
2. HOME, SWEET HOME – The Dinos return home for the first time this semester, where they’ve had quite a bit of success so far this season. Calgary enters the weekend a perfect 6-0 inside the Jack Simpson Gym this season, with weekend sweeps over Regina, Thompson Rivers and provincial rival Alberta. The Dinos will have two more series at home this season after this weekend, hosting UBC Feb. 3-4 and Manitoba Feb. 17-18 to close out the regular season.
3. FLOWER POWER – Rookie Daisy Olsen continues to show her strength for the Dinos. The outside hitter managed 26 kills in the two matches against the Cascades to open her second semester as a UCalgary student-athlete and has now tallied 150 total kills since her debut back in October.
4. RAINING ASSISTS – Stella Rains continues to do a great job orchestrating the Dinos’ attack this season, averaging 23 assists during Calgary’s six-game win streak before the holiday break. Despite Calgary’s three-set loss to the Cascades last weekend, the third-year setter racked up 32 assists, while also contributing three kills of her own.
5. FIRST MEETINGS – This weekend will be the first time the Wesmen and Dinos will meet this season, their first conference meeting since a weekend series back in February of 2020 in Winnipeg where the two teams split. Winnipeg won the final match of that meeting, which ended an 11-game win streak by the Dinos in the overall series, one that Calgary leads 26-9 heading into the weekend.
