Dinos fall in four in Winnipeg

Published on

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Wesmen continued their red-hot finish to the season, taking care of business with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19) win over Calgary Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

The win is the fourth straight overall and sixth in a row at home for the Wesmen, who finish their regular season at 15-9 – good for third place in the Canada West conference, behind only Alberta and Mount Royal in the conference standings. The Wesmen, however, are the only team in the league to have already completed their 24-game conference slate, meaning their playoff fate is far from settled.

Four other teams – Brandon, UBC, Saskatchewan and Trinity Western — sit within two games of the Wesmen and any number of combinations of results next weekend could greatly alter their final standing.

For now, however, they did what they needed to do, winning all four matches in the month of February after going 4-4 in January.

Isaiah Olfert had 18 kills with nine digs and hit .351 for the Wesmen, who still have a chance at a top-four placing and a chance to host the first round of playoffs. Nigel Nielsen, on his Senior Night, came up with 15 kills, six digs and four block assists.

Alex Krykewich added 13 more digs — his sixth double-digit match of the season.

The Wesmen hit .336 for the match, the third time in the past four matches they’ve hit better than .300. Calgary was held to .139.

Louis Kunstmann led the Dinos (7-15), who had been eliminated from playoff contention, with 14 kills.
